Maya's Story: A Journey Beyond Survival

The following story is a composite based on the experiences of multiple Survivor Ventures participants. It represents real barriers, real victories, and the transformative impact of survivor-centered support while protecting the privacy of those we serve.

When Maya first came to Survivor Ventures, she was carrying more than the weight of her past. She was facing significant barriers to employment and housing, navigating a lengthy criminal record, multiple legal judgments, and an ongoing custody case involving her children. Like many survivors, she wasn't just rebuilding her life, she was rebuilding her future.

Her journey began in Survivor Ventures' Re-Entry Program, where she found a safe place to stabilize and access the support she needed. Through trauma-informed advocacy, she received assistance navigating the court system and ultimately regained custody of her children, creating a foundation for her family to move forward together.

While working through re-entry, Maya also entered our Survivors to Entrepreneurs (S2E) Program, where she received employment support and was connected with one of Survivor Ventures' trusted community employment partners. Stable employment not only provided financial independence but also strengthened her ability to achieve her family and legal goals.

As her stability grew, Maya transitioned into our Housing Stability Program, where she secured a place to call home. Having safe, stable housing gave her and her children the opportunity to establish routines, build security, and continue moving forward without the constant uncertainty of where they would sleep next.

Throughout every phase of her journey, one thing remained constant: her commitment to healing.

From the day she entered Survivor Ventures through today, Maya has actively participated in our Holistic Care Program, where Survivor Ventures removes the financial barriers to wellness services that are often not covered by Medicaid or traditional insurance. Through breath-work, equine therapy, EMDR, and Creative Wellness sessions, Maya discovered new ways to regulate her nervous system, process trauma, and reconnect with herself without facing the financial burden of accessing these life-changing services.

Each step forward built upon the last. Safe shelter created stability. Employment restored confidence. Holistic care supported healing. Housing established security. Together, these services worked as one comprehensive approach, allowing Maya to continue building a life rooted in hope rather than survival.

Today, Maya is thriving. Inspired by her own healing journey and the confidence she gained along the way, she has turned her creativity into a small artisan business, becoming an entrepreneur and creating a future on her own terms.

Maya's story reflects what is possible when survivors have access to comprehensive, survivor-led support that addresses every aspect of rebuilding a life. Healing isn't a single moment, it's a journey.
